Architect Zdeněk Plesník / Villa Miroslava Zikmunda
The book maps the exceptional work of Zdeněk Plesník, a key figure in the post-war architecture of Zlín. Its focus is on Zikmund’s villa – a house originally built in 1933–1935 for Josef Januštík and significantly adapted by Plesník in the 1950s for the traveler Miroslav Zikmund, who lived and worked there for more than sixty years.
The villa is an example of modernist style and a personal story at the intersection of architecture, design and cultural history; it also includes Plesník’s original interior furnishings, made by Miroslav Navrátil. The texts by Petr Všetečka and Rostislav Švácha place the villa in a broader context and introduce other Plesník buildings, such as the villas of Jiří Hanzelka and Zdeněk Liška.
The graphic design by Zdeněk Macháček (studio 6.15) also deserves great attention. It combines the authenticity of the house in an exceptionally sensitive way with the selection of high-quality paper without the use of lamination – the book will bear subtle traces after each reading, just as the house bears traces of life. The cover is decorated with the silhouette of Miroslav Zikmund and a drawing by Zdeněk Plesník – two distinctive personalities whose meeting gave rise to a unique space with a deep genius loci.
