Svatopluk Slovenčík (1934-1999) – Silence of the Studio
Svatopluk Slovenčík (1934–1999) was a painter, draftsman and teacher whose work is still inextricably linked to the phenomenon of Zlín and the wider region. His creative approach can be understood as a systematic process of observation and investigation of the material reality around him: a still life, the studio environment or a section of the urban landscape become for the author the focus of concentrated reflections on the “plans of being”.
Although a recognized figure in the Zlín artistic identity, the author and his creative statement still remain a marginal presence in the broader perception of Czech art of recent decades. This first monograph was created with the aim of correcting this situation by placing Slovenčík’s unmistakable work not only in the Czech but also in the international context of art of the second half of the 20th century. It offers the reader a representative cross-section of the artist’s life’s work.
Slovenčík’s work encompasses a wide range of techniques, from painting and drawing to collages and combined and spatial works. It is in this diverse work that his “thought laboratory” is most clearly reflected, in which he constantly developed and refined his artistic visions.
In the spirit of the author’s thinking and creation, characteristically anchored in clearly defined cycles, the monograph is structured according to key thematic areas, where the connections between individual works are comprehensively reflected according to the author’s “source trinity”: space, rhythm, shape.
The publication was published by the Čestmír Vančura Foundation. The author of the publication is Richard Drury. The graphic design and print production are the work of STUDIO 6.15 s. r. o. in Zlín.
